Top 5 Coffee Shops
Near Orange Beach

Where to find a real cup before the beach fills in, from the owners of Sunset Corner.

Orange Beach is not a coffee town the way Portland is a coffee town, but there is good coffee here once you know which door to open. Two of these places pour before 7 a.m., one of them at six, and the two most serious roasters are a twenty minute drive west into Gulf Shores. These are the five we actually use, with the hours that matter and the ones that will trip you up out of season.

The Southern Grind Coffee House at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama
No. 01 About 10 Minutes Away
The Southern Grind Coffee House at The Wharf
$$ North on AL-161, then west on Canal Road to The Wharf

The doors open at 7:00 a.m. It is a genuine independent coffee house on The Wharf's Main Street, pouring espresso and cold brew, with pastries, a decent breakfast, indoor seating and a patio onto the promenade. Open year-round, seven days a week, on two schedules: from September 1 to the end of February it runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from March 1 to Labor Day it is 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. On a cool morning the inside room is what you actually want.

 Pro Tip

There is a second Southern Grind at Hotel Indigo, 22843 Perdido Beach Blvd, barely two minutes west of the condo and open at 6:30 a.m. That is the one for a sunrise beach walk coffee run.

BuzzCatz Coffee and Sweets on Canal Road in Orange Beach, Alabama
No. 02 About 7 Minutes Away
BuzzCatz Coffee & Sweets
$ North on AL-161, then east on Canal Road (AL-180)

The cinnamon rolls are enormous and they are baked on site, along with the cookies and the cakes. This is a local favorite on Canal Road that does coffee and, more to the point, dessert. Open year-round from 7 a.m. and running late into the evening: roughly to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, which makes it one of the few places here that works as an evening stop as well as a morning one. The room is small, so it fills up on weekends.

 Pro Tip

It runs until 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, so treat it as the after-dinner dessert stop too. Cosmo's is in the same courtyard, so one parking spot covers dinner and dessert.

Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii on Canal Road in Orange Beach, Alabama
No. 03 About 6 Minutes Away
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii
$$ North on AL-161, then west on Canal Road (AL-180)

Six a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, year-round, and it is the earliest door on this list. That is the real argument for it: you can collect coffee for eight people before anyone else in the building is awake. It is the Hawaiian bean chain's Orange Beach outpost on Canal Road, pouring Kona and Hawaiian blends, flavored lattes and blended drinks. Expect standard pastries rather than a kitchen.

 Pro Tip

This is the 6 a.m. option. Put a mobile order in the night before, swing through on the way to a sunrise walk, and you are back on the sand with coffee before the beach fills in.

Foam Coffee in Gulf Shores, Alabama
No. 04 About 20 Minutes Away
Foam Coffee
$$ West on Perdido Beach Blvd (AL-182) into Gulf Shores

Open daily, but only from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and that closing time is the whole story. This is a small Gulf Shores shop with a loyal local following, the sort of place that cares about the pour rather than the syrup list. It is strictly a morning errand and easy to miss if you plan a lazy start. Seating is limited. It is worth the drive west if good espresso matters to you, but plan it as its own errand.

 Pro Tip

Note the 2 p.m. close. This is the single most common way visitors miss this place. Go on a morning you are already heading into Gulf Shores for something else, and check their Facebook page for holiday week hours, which is where they post changes.

Southern Shores Coffee, a small-batch roaster and cafe in Gulf Shores, Alabama
No. 05 About 20 Minutes Away
Southern Shores Coffee
$$ West on Perdido Beach Blvd (AL-182) into Gulf Shores

They roast their own beans on site, so this is the place to buy whole beans to take home as well as to drink a flat white. It is a small-batch roaster and cafe in Gulf Shores, quiet and low key compared with the beach front cafes. Open year-round, but the hours are short: roughly 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and closed all day Sunday, so treat it as a weekday morning stop. It sits two blocks from Foam, so pair them on one trip.

 Pro Tip

Buy a bag of beans on the way out. It is the best edible souvenir on this list and it travels better than anything from a gift shop. It is closed all day Sunday, which is a common check-out morning, and Saturday ends at noon, so do not save this one for your last day.

Hours change, especially in winter. Call ahead or check a shop's own page before you drive.
