Where we actually send our own guests, with the winter and holiday hours spelled out.
Shopping here splits three ways: the beach store you sprint to when a swimsuit gives out, the waterfront streets worth a whole evening, and the outlet run up to Foley. Every one of the five below is open year-round, but several keep shorter winter hours or close for the holidays, and the notes say which. Where a phone call before you drive over is worth the minute, we have said so.
Swimwear, towels, boogie boards, hermit crabs, shark teeth and shell everything, on Perdido Beach Blvd about two and a half miles west of the Perdido Pass bridge. This is the archetypal Gulf Coast beach store, it is open year-round, and it is where you go when someone forgot a swimsuit or the kids need a rainy afternoon souvenir budget. The widely listed 8am to midnight hours are the summer pattern. Winter closing is earlier and is not published, so call ahead before a late run in December.
Buy the boogie boards and sand toys on day one rather than renting, then leave them behind at checkout instead of packing them home. A week of rentals costs more than the boards do.
Two stories of boutiques, gift shops and galleries run along a marina promenade here, with restaurants, a cinema and the Ferris wheel at the end of it. It is the walkable waterfront Main Street of the area, open year-round, free to walk, and the parking is free too. Portside on Main, the newest wing, opened in 2025 and added another row of shops at the end of the street, so anything written before then is describing a smaller Wharf than the one you will walk. Through the holidays the whole street is lit for Christmas and the shops stay open in the evening, which is exactly when a cold, early-dark day needs somewhere to go.
Go after dark. The promenade is at its best around 5pm to 8pm, fully lit but not late, and the Christmas lighting runs through the holidays. Do not stop at the Ferris wheel and turn round: Portside on Main is the newest stretch and the easiest to walk straight past. Check individual shop hours around the holidays, because the street is open even when some tenants are not.
Tanger counts 103 stores in this large open-air outlet center in Foley, open year-round and the biggest shopping draw within half an hour of the condo. It works for a rainy or cold day only in the sense that the walkways are covered. The layout itself is outdoors, so dress for it in December. The center extends its hours in the weeks before Christmas, closes early on Christmas Eve, and is closed on Christmas Day itself.
If your stay straddles Christmas, check tanger.com/foley for that week's published hours rather than the standard ones. The December schedule changes almost daily. Christmas Day is the one certainty: closed.
A city-run arts campus on Wolf Bay with a gallery, a gift shop, a clay studio and a working glass Hot Shop where you can watch artists blow glass for free, or book a session and make your own piece. It is open year-round, but the office, gallery and Hot Shop run Monday through Friday only and are closed both Saturday and Sunday, which catches a lot of weekend visitors by surprise. Glass and pottery sessions require an appointment.
Call 251-981-ARTS (2787) well ahead to book a glass-blowing or pottery session. They are appointment only and they fill. Because it is weekdays only, and closed for city holidays around Christmas, this is one to pin down early in a December stay rather than leaving to the last day.
A small Mediterranean-styled marina courtyard of independent shops, galleries and restaurants wrapped around a working harbor, open year-round and generally 10am to 6pm. It is a twenty-minute stop rather than an afternoon, and the appeal is the setting: boats on three sides, a brick courtyard, and a handful of genuinely local shops instead of chains. Easy to combine with lunch, or with a walk out to the Perdido Pass jetties nearby.
This is the closest place to the condo to replace a swimsuit that did not survive the surf, far quicker than the run out to Foley. The shops keep shorter hours than the restaurants, so come before six.
